Trauma Therapy in Overland Park for Adults in-person and Available Virtually

Embarking on the path of healing from trauma can be an incredibly daunting and courageous decision.

You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and at times, even disconnected from your own emotions and experiences. It's entirely normal to carry the weight of past traumas, which may be affecting your daily life, relationships, and overall sense of self.

Hi, I’m Kate Perkins, LCPC, LPC, a licensed therapist who supports trauma survivors through Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Memories, nightmares, unwanted thoughts, feelings, and negative beliefs are debilitating and painful experiences that keep you stuck.  At times, you may feel as though you don't have control over thoughts, feelings, and memories; you try to manage these experiences as best you can, and often times, it feels as though you're just trying to survive. You crave healing and clarity, but you can't seem to let go of the past. These experiences have a strong grip on you. Trauma therapy can help.  Trauma is any past experience that is perceived as scary, life threatening, and painful.

My Approach to Working with Trauma

Clients I work with often express feelings of fear, vulnerability, and a sense of being stuck in the past. Traumatic memories can haunt your present, creating a constant struggle to find peace and closure. But it's important to know that you don't have to carry this burden alone.

Trauma can occur from hearing about someone's experience, experiencing it yourself, or witnessing the disturbing event. It leaves us confused, distressed, and unable to process what happened. Healing and freedom, comes from the courage to talk about those thoughts and feelings, while learning skills to manage your body's response to triggers.

In our therapy sessions, I offer a safe and empathetic environment where you can explore your feelings and memories without judgment. I specialize in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a highly effective approach that can help you process and heal from traumatic experiences.

EMDR can help us not feel triggered by the events of our past. Our bodies remember the trauma and EMDR can help neutralize our reactivity or triggers to the trauma. Together, we will gently navigate through the layers of your trauma, working at a pace that feels comfortable for you. EMDR is a powerful tool that can lead to profound healing and transformation, allowing you to regain control over your life and emotions.

Your journey towards healing may have moments of discomfort, but it's important to remember that you are not defined by your trauma. You have the strength within you to move beyond it, and I am here to support you every step of the way.

How I can help

When starting EMDR, we will begin by laying the foundation with EMDR stabilization skills to help manage any symptoms between sessions. We will follow our treatment plan and target specific memories that create distress for you in your life and impair functioning. We will move at your pace: remember you are in control. We will pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and respect your body throughout this process.

This treatment is based on a solid relationship with your therapist in order to courageously process the traumatic experience.  During EMDR, you will be asked to recall the distressing memory along with your thoughts, beliefs, and feelings associated with the memory.  During this experience, you will reprocess the scary event in order for it to lessen it's grip on your life.  EMDR is approved by the American Psychological Association as well as the Veteran Affairs.
